Play a game or watch a game?

I must be one of the dumbest gamers on the planet.  I live in my own little world and never really think of how other “gamers” view gaming or enjoy gaming or what they think is gaming.

I read an article tonight at my opinion as a gamer in which they question Nintendo’s objective to make more moola off of Let’s Play Video‘s.  It was revealed to me that some gamers will actually watch an entire game with out even playing it , like at all.  You can read the article here.

Let’s Play…Unless the Developers Tell Us Not To

I fail to believe that and i sincerely hope that this is not the case.  After posting that article about the equality of gaming, i find myself somewhat torn about the acceptance speech that i was giving in that article.  If you watch an entire game on You Tube and you have no interest in ever owning that game, are you actually a gamer then?  My knee jerk reaction is a deafening no!  Does that make me a hypocrite then?  Because the person watching the video obviously has some interest in games if he/she has taken the time too look for it online and maybe just can’t afford to purchase said game and wants to get as close as an experience to the game as possible.

*Sigh* now i feel bad because if that is the case, then i can understand why Nintendo would want to restrict those kinds of videos and to cash in on it, this being just one reason if it is in fact true.  And i feel bad for the hypothetical gamer that can’t afford to play this game.

I am honestly torn.  I need everybody that reads here to vote and leave a comment for me.  I am exceptionally curious about this.  I have no allegiance yet and that bothers the hell out of me so i need your help.  If you voted for option C, please leave a comment to elaborate.

Sony’s 2nd Hand Game Patent: Ten year rumour or Future Reality?

PS3Every gamer out there has surely heard the rumor that Sony has implemented a new  patent that blocks the distribution of second hand games on the future console.  If you didn’t know about this, congratulations, you just found out.  I cant stress this enough though that this IS just a rumor at this point.  Yes Sony has indeed filed a patent which states:

“According to the present embodiment, realized is the electronic content processing system that reliably restricts the use of electronic content dealt in the second-hand markets. As a result, the dealing of electronic content in the second-hand markets is suppressed, which in turn supports the redistribution of part of proceeds from sales of the electronic content to the developers. Though in the following description a game application (AP) is exemplified as the electronic content, the present embodiment is similarly applicable to various kinds of electronic content such as an office suite, images, and music content.

“By employing the game playing system 1000 according to the present embodiment, the use permission tag 220 together with the game disk 210 is supplied to the user, and the use permission tag 220 actively determines the use permit/rejection of electronic content. Thereby, the use of game AP stored in the game disk 210 can be restricted as appropriate according to the attribute of a reproduction device. Consider, for example, a case where used is a game package 200 distributed in the second-hand market. Then the ID of reproduction device for the game disk 210 differs from the legitimate use device ID stored in the use permission tag 220, so that the game disk can be reproduced in a mode which is predetermined for those bought and sold in the second-hand market. Also, for example, a content key may be supplied to the reproduction device 130 and the encrypted game AP may be decrypted using the content key only if the reproduction device ID matches a legitimate use device ID. Hence, use of game APs bought and sold in the second-hand market can be eliminated.”

If you guys failed to understand that, that’s OK…I didn’t understand most of it either.  (All those big words and all.)  In a nutshell it means that if this patent is passed they will have sole rights to resell their own products because nobody else will be able to thanks to some groovy ID Tags or Chips that will be embedded somehow on the disc and console.  I think I explained that right.  If i didn’t, whoops.  Read Lazy Gamers article to get some clarification but IT HASN’T BEEN CONFIRMED BY SONY…YET

Sony to block used games on the PS4? – Lazy Gamer

Now that I have successfully re-blogged someone else’s information I can get to my opinion.

I think that if Sony does go through with this they are going to be the biggest dicks of the century and it obviously will be a total bitch slap to the gaming community especially for the “Playstationites” ( my word..playstationers was taken) who have always backed Sony up, obviously.  But lets not point the finger only at Sony since Microsoft has been said to be flirting with this idea as well.   I read at IGN that Sony is going to wait for Microsoft to announce first and I can’t help but wonder if they are waiting to see if their console can play second hand games because i think that whoever does say ” no more second hand games” the other probably will say,” Pssst….we still have second games.  Come join us.”  And i would because who the hell has money to spend on buggy AAA games at $50+ (R500-R600 in S.A) which mostly never live up to the hype, pay for extra DLC, pay your subscription and pay for your internet to even use most of the services in the first place.  I don’t think I’m the only one who would pick the cheapest and easiest option.  How are these companies not making money.  They are global leaders.  I think they are just not making the money they want to be making and are expecting more because they know that we as gamers will throw our money at them (voluntarily i might add) because well, what else are we going to do?

Sony Will Let Microsoft Make First Movie – IGN

This whole locking of consoles thing, i think goes as far back as the 80’s so it’s nothing new really.  But it’s a big deal now because of how bloody expensive everything is and that it’s so easy to buy a shit game.

I like second hand games because i can at least try the game and if i don’t like it i can sell it again and at least make some percentage back of what i wasted on it.  But then i understand that Sony and Microsoft get upset because they don’t make money back on what I sold because they did make it and technically do deserve something for it and I’m pretty sure there is something in the fine print of about not being allowed to resell or rent it out.   If i purchase a PS4 i know I’m going to be scared of every little update wondering if this is the one that blocks my second hand games.  (Although thinking  about it now I doubt we will even be able to play our ps3 games on the PS4) which i think is kind of pathetic but i do understand why at the same time being new technology and all.

If this goes ahead second hand stores WILL close down, (not all of them) but most of them and i don’t  have a doubt about it.  The guys that will stay open will probably be Gamestop and who ever else gets the pre-order stuff.

“If they are not careful Ouya might actually give both of them a run for their money.” – Gamers Therapy

I strongly feel that Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and whoever else there is needs to think about the gaming community and what games mean to us and how much money we actually spend on the hope that what we buy is a truly fantastic game only to be disappointed yet again by another stupid decision which is like a knife in the back.  The fact that this patent was even thought about is only the first sting.

Most importantly, think….What would Jesus do?

E3 Is Coming

With E3 looming around the corner, I can’t help but get slightly anxious.  So many questions need to be answered and E3 is the place to get the info.

Biggest stories

 Xbox 720

Will the new Xbox be unveiled at E3?  If it is announced what features will it have?  Will it be strictly online play?  (I doubt it ) Will there be any Demo’s available to play? Although Microsoft has made it clear that there will be no new console this year and will be focusing on support and games for the Xbox 360, they might surprise you because hey, it’s Microsoft.

Sony PS4

Tongues have been wagging for months regarding Sony’s new console.  Rumors have been flying left and right and every time a new rumor surfaces, Sony is quick to dismiss it.  Sony won’t be caught with their pants down again as was the case when Xbox 360 was released giving Microsoft one hell of a lead in the market.  Sony usually has a ten year life span regarding their consoles and the PS3 is no different.

My top 11 games that I hope are included at E3 are as follows

Assassins Creed 3

We’ve all seen the announcement trailer.  We’ve all seen the game play trailer.  Now we actually need to see someone demo the game.  Any new information regarding this game is an absolute welcome.

Hitman:  Absolution

There are mixed opinions on this game.  Truly hardcore fans of the series have been quick to dismiss it saying that I.O. has “dumbed” it down.  While the developers say that there will still be plenty of challenge to the game, it’s just been adapted for new comers and casual gamers.

Tomb Raider

It’s unfortunate for the delay, but hey, I don’t have that much money anyway.  Scheduled now for a 2013 release, Tomb Raider remains on my top 10 list of games to get.

Darksiders 2

I didn’t expect a delay on this one.  Delayed until August 2012, I am especially excited about being Death.  As with AC3 any information regarding this game is worth getting.

Developed by Obsidian, I’m holding thumbs that a trailer will be revealed for this one of a kind RPG.

Resident Evil 6

I’ve never been a huge fan of Resident Evil.  I played Nemesis way back on the PS1 and enjoyed it but since then never really played any other.  I must be the only gamer that actually enjoyed most of the films.  (I am expecting a few horrible comments now, just watch the language guys).  However this game in particular has got my attention.

The new rebooted Devil May Cry, fans were up in arms over the character change but I’m quiet curious to see how it plays out.  Maybe we’ll get to see how Dante got his white hair.  The game could be a prequel.  Don’t judge this too harshly.

The last of Us

A new IP from Naughty Dog, this survival game is shaping up to maybe being the next game of the year.

The Last Guardian

This poor game has been dragged through the mud these past few years, taking the biggest knock when Fumito Ueda (of ICO and Shadow of Colossus fame) left Sony.  Although all is not lost, Sony Santa Monica (God of War Dev) is assisting the studio.  Team ICO is a small company anyway so let’s all be patient, they’ve never released a crap game before.

The fist Crysis you were in a jungle.  Crysis 2, you were in New York City.  Crysis 3 is a hybrid bringing some greenery into New York City.  Over run with Ceph, Prophet returns to New York City to claim his territory back.

Grand Theft Auto 5

Grand Theft Auto 5 has been completely out of the lime light since its announcement trailer last year.  I think it will either come out towards the end of the year or beginning 2013 but hopefully we’ll get to see some new game play, hell even some new art work would be appreciated.

What games would you like to see at E3?  Feel free to comment

How To : BulletStorm Installation guide

I got Bulletstorm from a friend last night. This is the third time that I have received a version of Bulletstorm due to major installation issues in which I just deleted, out of sheer frustration, the other two versions off my computer. I was so excited to finally install a “working” version of the game that I made no plans at all last night except to play Bulletstorm. Continue reading
