Before you go off at me saying things like “How can you ask should games be less fun? Of course they should be fun!” Hear me out.
Before you go off at me saying things like “How can you ask should games be less fun? Of course they should be fun!” Hear me out.
This post is going to be rather different from what i normally do. Short and Sweet.
I quit smoking on Sunday, so I’ve been going through an extraordinarily tough time this week. My withdrawals came like lightning today. And it would take me completely by surprise. I’ve been sweating, shaking, had uncontrollable mood swings and been an emotional wreck most of the day but at the same time i was able to counter it, thanks to a few amazing people and sites that i have had the good fortune of being able to communicate with.
With the help of WordPress I have been blessed with the ability to communicate to like minded gamers all over the world. Gaming is in my soul and if it hadn’t been for WordPress or my fellow bloggers i think i would’ve snapped.
The last two weeks have been exceptionally interesting and exciting. The blogs and sites that I have read, the people that I have conversed with have inspired me in such a way that right now I feel completely at peace and happy. (or it could be a withdrawal symptom) I have made more friends and had more fun in the last two weeks with my blog than i have had in the last two years of trying to make it work. I love the fact that i can bounce ideas off of people, which will lead to a new way of thinking. I love the fact that an article that i did inspires someone else and I love reading another opinion that makes me question mine, or how I view certain things. I love conversing with each and every person that has made the time to reply to my comments and i look forward to getting to know you guys better in the coming months.
Thanks goes to (DRUM ROLL)
I first heard Ryan Clements on the exceptionally popular, number one playstation podcast on the internet, Beyond! in which he was one of the co-hosts/members. He’s a down to earth guy, loving, tolerant and supportive. When ever i get mad at work i think “What would Ryan Clements do?” and with that I’d take everything in my stride. Unfortunately Ryan was retrenched from IGN at the beginning of the year thus leaving Beyond! a missing vital cog that made It so popular. Well, to me anyway. Ryan, if you ever read this, the fact that you replied to my tweet has done more for me than you’ll ever know. You are a fantastic reviewer, excellent host, awesome novelist, and all round nice guy and that is exceptionally rare to find in this world. Beyond!
Robert W Kingett:
I met Robert Kingett on one of those random blog hoping nights and was lucky enough to be able to share an open and honest two way conversation with this man. I plan to learn a lot from you Robert. Don’t go anywhere. You’re articles are excellently written and you have raised the expectations I have set for myself to a whole new level. You really are an inspiration.
United We Game:
I honestly don’t know how many people you guys have working there. But I love each and every article you publish. However The Duck of Indeed deserves a special mention as when i read his articles i am completely engrossed by his peculiar nature and interesting writing style. Special thanks again to United We Game with regards to the contest. I was lucky enough to win a Gamestop gift card which really made my day!
My Opinion As A Gamer:
Boyscout299, I have only known you for twenty four hours and i am already loving the way our articles are bouncing off each other. You have insightful opinions on gaming which makes me question the whole “what makes us gamers” scenario in a different light.
Recollections of Play:
Carey was one of the first blogs that I ever read here and was the first one to truly nudge me in the right direction. She was also the first follower i had on Twitter. I may not be on her top twelve list but I am proud to be on her blog roll. Thanks Carey 🙂
and of course, thanks must go to WordPress for without whom none of this could have been possible.
Wow, my short and sweet article wasn’t so short was it. Anyway thanks again everyone.
Why are gamers so rude? I don’t get it, i really don’t. I’ve been a a gamer most of my life, and I’ve had different types of people enter this fantastic digital world with me that were into gaming, I.T. and a whole bunch of other stuff. I had black, colored, Indian, Portuguese, white, half Italian friends and i never treated any of them differently. They were all gamers and on that nugget of wisdom I treat gamers and non-gamers the same because there’s no reason to be a dick about a persons preference in gaming or lack of gaming.
If you guys remember, back in the day it was the dominate thought that gamers were fat. living in their mothers basement’s, eating chocolate bars like a bad Eric Cartman. If you mentioned gaming you were already deemed a nerd and a dork and would remain a social outcast until you did something exceptionally cool to prove your worth. Which i still believe is a bull shit tradition.
As the times have changed it’s more popular to be a gamer now more so than ever. Over the weekend i read an article at Theryanblog in which they were questioning whether achievements and trophies ruined the single player experience and perhaps even tarnish a game depending on the content. There was a pro’s list and a con’s list and one of the cons stood out. Maybe I’m ignorant and naive but i never knew that gamers judged other gamers based on their trophy level. Some gamers won’t even talk to you if you’re level is lower than theirs. After posting a few comments at the article below i decided to do some testing of my own.
You can read the full article at the link below.
I game mostly on PS3, so today i thought i would log into PSN, visit a few places, maybe meet some people online and get their opinions on the matter. By the way, I’m level 12 on PSN. It’s sad to say that most of the people I met today are dicks. I kid you not, I met so many people today all of them with a level that’s between the end teens to beginning twenties. When i sent them a message or entered one of their chat sessions one of three things would happen. They would either completely ignore me or say directly “we only deal with gamers” and my personal favorite “PM me when you’ve leveled up”. This is sometimes even before I’ve introduced myself. They don’t know if I’m a guy, girl, black, white, three-eyed, two brained, seven-limbed, hermaphrodite living in Rome. These arrogant sons of bitches won’t even acknowledge your existence until you meet there virtual expectations. That really saddens and annoys me for my own personal reasons that I will get to later on in this article. It turns out that Trophies/Achievements can ruin some good gaming fun and social networking if you allow it. But this little example isn’t the end of my story. If they were quick to judge a person they knew nothing about, I wondered what would happen if i had to say i was a girl gamer.
So i created a new account on PSN, logged into the account and obviously i had fuck all trophies. I setup my girl avatar and once i was back online i proceeded to speak to completely random people. Now it didn’t seem to make a difference what my trophy count was, people were speaking to me. But not about gaming. The first thing i got asked was “Are you hot?” Seriously? What virtual hell have i stumbled into now? Every time i brought up gaming though the conversation would change back to a more demeaning nature and gaming would not be part of it.
So now I’m thinking we as gamers judge other gamers based on a number next to our gamer tag and if you’re a girl gamer you either need to be a flirt to enjoy some company or need to kick ass in a multi-player match in order to prove yourself. Both of these objectives are bull shit. I don’t understand why woman have to prove themselves to men. That’s right i said it, you women shouldn’t have to prove anything and I have only one reason to validate my opinion. Childbirth, after the birth of my daughter i have seen the ugly side of being a woman and the pain that you guys have to go through and as men we never will never experience that kind of pain and that makes you a hell of a lot stronger.
This whole setup stinks and it honestly saddens me knowing that there are gamers out there who are not in it for the games. They’d rather just trophy hunt which is OK but it’s not OK to not be polite to someone just because their trophy level is sitting on a lower number than yours. I feel sorry for girl gamers and I am appalled by our gaming community in the way that you guys are treated. I read IGN a lot and one of their bloggers is under the community spotlight which is a great way to get recognition there. She’s a gamer and a very pretty one. One of the first comments on that article “the reason she’s under the community spotlight is because she has big boobs.” I want to stick my head in the sand and let the world fade away. I hate reading things like that. It just fucking bugs the hell out of me.
Let me tell you why i game before i finish this article. I was a social outcast when i was younger. I’m short, not very talented, and I had a bit of a confidence issue. I was also getting picked on at school because i did what i needed to do. Gaming was an outlet for me to DE-stress and relax. I only had a handful of gaming buddies at the time that would come play Ice Climber and Battle City with me. If i didn’t have gaming i would’ve been one of those kids that shot up their schools and I’m very honest about that. There were plenty of times where I even considered suicide. Gaming saved my life. I’m not trying to be dramatic but this is the fact of the matter.
The gaming community should not judge other gamers based on genitalia, sexual preference, age, trophy count, color, race and anything that separates us in the real world. We should be tolerant, polite, kind and helping. What was proven today is that some gamers are no better than the people who had outcast us back in the day and you give us a bad name. We were a family at one point. We all stuck together. Now we have factions and battle of the sexes. We don’t know what kind of impact we may have on a persons life when random encounters throw us together so its up to us to be responsible. You guys being dicks might be the catalyst to some poor kid killing himself when we could’ve helped him all along. It is our responsibility to help each other. As gamers we should be united. From all walks of gaming life, we are all gamers and we should treat each other as such.
Can i get a hallelujah?
Every gamer out there has surely heard the rumor that Sony has implemented a new patent that blocks the distribution of second hand games on the future console. If you didn’t know about this, congratulations, you just found out. I cant stress this enough though that this IS just a rumor at this point. Yes Sony has indeed filed a patent which states:
“According to the present embodiment, realized is the electronic content processing system that reliably restricts the use of electronic content dealt in the second-hand markets. As a result, the dealing of electronic content in the second-hand markets is suppressed, which in turn supports the redistribution of part of proceeds from sales of the electronic content to the developers. Though in the following description a game application (AP) is exemplified as the electronic content, the present embodiment is similarly applicable to various kinds of electronic content such as an office suite, images, and music content.
“By employing the game playing system 1000 according to the present embodiment, the use permission tag 220 together with the game disk 210 is supplied to the user, and the use permission tag 220 actively determines the use permit/rejection of electronic content. Thereby, the use of game AP stored in the game disk 210 can be restricted as appropriate according to the attribute of a reproduction device. Consider, for example, a case where used is a game package 200 distributed in the second-hand market. Then the ID of reproduction device for the game disk 210 differs from the legitimate use device ID stored in the use permission tag 220, so that the game disk can be reproduced in a mode which is predetermined for those bought and sold in the second-hand market. Also, for example, a content key may be supplied to the reproduction device 130 and the encrypted game AP may be decrypted using the content key only if the reproduction device ID matches a legitimate use device ID. Hence, use of game APs bought and sold in the second-hand market can be eliminated.”
If you guys failed to understand that, that’s OK…I didn’t understand most of it either. (All those big words and all.) In a nutshell it means that if this patent is passed they will have sole rights to resell their own products because nobody else will be able to thanks to some groovy ID Tags or Chips that will be embedded somehow on the disc and console. I think I explained that right. If i didn’t, whoops. Read Lazy Gamers article to get some clarification but IT HASN’T BEEN CONFIRMED BY SONY…YET
Now that I have successfully re-blogged someone else’s information I can get to my opinion.
I think that if Sony does go through with this they are going to be the biggest dicks of the century and it obviously will be a total bitch slap to the gaming community especially for the “Playstationites” ( my word..playstationers was taken) who have always backed Sony up, obviously. But lets not point the finger only at Sony since Microsoft has been said to be flirting with this idea as well. I read at IGN that Sony is going to wait for Microsoft to announce first and I can’t help but wonder if they are waiting to see if their console can play second hand games because i think that whoever does say ” no more second hand games” the other probably will say,” Pssst….we still have second games. Come join us.” And i would because who the hell has money to spend on buggy AAA games at $50+ (R500-R600 in S.A) which mostly never live up to the hype, pay for extra DLC, pay your subscription and pay for your internet to even use most of the services in the first place. I don’t think I’m the only one who would pick the cheapest and easiest option. How are these companies not making money. They are global leaders. I think they are just not making the money they want to be making and are expecting more because they know that we as gamers will throw our money at them (voluntarily i might add) because well, what else are we going to do?
This whole locking of consoles thing, i think goes as far back as the 80’s so it’s nothing new really. But it’s a big deal now because of how bloody expensive everything is and that it’s so easy to buy a shit game.
I like second hand games because i can at least try the game and if i don’t like it i can sell it again and at least make some percentage back of what i wasted on it. But then i understand that Sony and Microsoft get upset because they don’t make money back on what I sold because they did make it and technically do deserve something for it and I’m pretty sure there is something in the fine print of about not being allowed to resell or rent it out. If i purchase a PS4 i know I’m going to be scared of every little update wondering if this is the one that blocks my second hand games. (Although thinking about it now I doubt we will even be able to play our ps3 games on the PS4) which i think is kind of pathetic but i do understand why at the same time being new technology and all.
If this goes ahead second hand stores WILL close down, (not all of them) but most of them and i don’t have a doubt about it. The guys that will stay open will probably be Gamestop and who ever else gets the pre-order stuff.
I strongly feel that Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo and whoever else there is needs to think about the gaming community and what games mean to us and how much money we actually spend on the hope that what we buy is a truly fantastic game only to be disappointed yet again by another stupid decision which is like a knife in the back. The fact that this patent was even thought about is only the first sting.
Most importantly, think….What would Jesus do?
