After Earth Review

after earth

One thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai. When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.

WARNING:  SPOILERS

I think all the negative hype surrounding this movie is honestly, unfounded.  Is it the best movie?  No, not even on my movie of the year list, but it’s not bad, the idea of having an earth that has evolved to kill  humans is interesting but unfortunately in this movie, there were plenty of moments that were squandered which robbed me of the experience that the introduction had built up.

Will Smith is awesome.  I’m going to say that again.  Will Smith is awesome.  I’ve always loved the guy ever since Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.  Will Smith is awesome.  When he’s in a scene he completely dominates.  I believe everything that comes out of his mouth and it was just so unfortunate that he was bound to a chair most of the film.  Oh you missed it…Will Smith is awesome.

Jaden Smith, quite surprisingly isn’t that bad as an actor.  I thought he would be terrible, and that voice of his was slightly annoying in the beginning but you get used to it.  Remember those squandered moments i was talking about earlier, well Jaden was in all of them.  His character is all over the place.  He’s a wimp but does completely idiotic things.  He wants to be a “ranger” but lacks the discipline to become one.  He wants his Dad to be proud of him, but refuses to takes his advice.  He makes the worst decisions ever and eventually i stopped caring about him all together.

Where this film had many moments for Jaden’s character to grow it was robbed by having  conveniently placed escape cards, like having a giant eagle that wanted to eat him for some reason, protect him because he tried to help save her babies.. even though nature has evolved to kill humans. Where in this survival of the fittest world does that rule apply?  So if i go into the wilderness, make friends with a lion, hunt with the lion but i get the kill, you don’t think that lion is going to kill me because it knows that it is stronger?  That might be the worst analogy i have ever given but I’m sure you get what I’m saying.  Everything else wanted to kill him including a humongous leech which he almost died from.  This kid couldn’t become a ranger because he got lucky the entire way.  Predictability stole Jaden’s character’s moment to shine.  Come on, M.Night shymalanalnaboo…..

Interestingly enough this was one of M. Night Shymalanaaboo’s best films that I’ve seen lately.

I can’t fault everything in this film though.  Although the script was poor, the acting was great from both Father and son, the visuals were beautiful and the creature designs were immaculate.  I haven’ t seen visuals like that since Avatar.

Good film with much potential wasted on a poorly executed script.

I randomly give it a 6/10 which means you should watch it but don’t expect a mind  blowing experience

  1. Nice review, this movie is going to be on my top ten worst movies of 2013 for sure. So far it’s number 1 {yeah it beat the last exorcism 2}. I just can’t stand Jaden Smith as an actor and I honestly think he’s bringing Will Smith down. Every movie he does now is with his son and they’re never any good. I miss the old Will Smith.
